Boudoir photography is about so much more than just taking sexy pictures. My experience with boudoir photography was transformative. Not only did I walk away with some gorgeous pieces of high end art, but I also walked away with a newfound appreciation for my body and style. So, if you’re thinking about doing a boudoir shoot, I highly recommend it!
What is Boudoir photography?
The word boudoir is a French term describing a woman’s private salon, dressing room and bedroom. Hence, it's a place she can withdraw to be with her private thoughts or entertain intimate guests. Boudoir photography is about more than just taking sexy pictures. In fact, the goal of the best boudoir photographers is to make the subject feel beautiful and confident, and to capture her intimate inner expression of beauty and femininity- to tap into what is unique and what is timeless about each woman!
These photographers encouraged me to express myself in ways that I don’t have an appropriate outlet for in daily life, and play out fantasy versions of myself with lace and bling. They sat me on a velvet chaise, wrapped me in pearls, draped me in satins, and fed me strawberries.. I felt like a queen!
Overcoming my fears of boudoir photography
I think many women get shaky at the thought of being exposed in front of photographers they just met. For me, it was a surprising opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and embrace my own beauty. I had recently gone through a tough personal journey. I wanted to find a way realign with my best self. As someone who is more comfortable behind the camera, I was nervous. But I also knew that this was an a much needed outlet to reconnect with my own femininity. Which I felt was in a rut for a long time. So I decided to go for it! Armed with a bag of stilettos and lingerie, I decided to take a leap of faith and trust these artsy boudoir photographers!
The day of the shoot was fun and empowering. I felt incredibly supported by Cherie & Hedley! Not only did they make me feel comfortable in my own skin, but they also made sure that I was relaxed and excited. We opened a bottle of champagne while the make up artist got to work on me! The shoot felt collaborative. I felt like they were genuinely trying to capture what’s special about me. As we began shooting, something magical happened; I stopped worrying about what the photos were going to look like and just embraced the moment. Because they’re so accepting and loving, I was able to let go of my inhibitions and allowed myself to be vulnerable in front of the camera. I was amazed at how confident and sexy I felt. With every shot, I saw a woman who was strong, beautiful, and unapologetically herself.
What makes the best boudoir photographers?
The photo shoot was an opportunity for me to learn about myself- by how I felt with different personas, sets, wigs, costumes and props. Do I feel more alive with light and airy “clean beauty” or is dark and sultry more empowering? Do I relate to the 60’s retro pin-up woman? Conversely, a futuristic fem-bot? A Hollywood celebrity? A Japanese geisha? Or perhaps a renaissance woman posing for Michelangelo? Their repertoire is endless! These are true fine-art photographers able to immerse me into any aspect of myself I wanted to explore without skipping a beat!
Throughout the experience, I learned that my femininity was something to be celebrated! At present, I will no longer shy away from it. Also I learned that I was capable of embracing my body—just the way it is. Before the shoot, I was too focused on my imperfections. But, nobody is perfect! Seeing the photos after the shoot helped me recognize my unique assets and personality. Now I embrace my quirks.
Every woman should try boudoir!
Would I recommend a boudoir photo session to other women? Absolutely! I believe EVERY woman deserves to feel beautiful, empowered, and confident. Boudoir photography is the perfect way to do that. It’s an opportunity to reconnect with your inner goddess, celebrate your body and embrace your femininity. The photos from my boudoir session are classy, intimate and gorgeous! True works of fine-art! There were plenty of styles to choose from with varying degrees of sensuality. Whenever I need a boost of confidence, I enjoy looking through my personal album with a glass of wine. I even hung a couple subtle images around my house that I wouldn’t be embarrassed for my friends and family to see.
